Whether it's the beginning of the year or the middle of the year, starting a new school can be both an exciting and scarey transition for students and their families. At East Oakview, I am one of many who work with your student to make the transition into their new school a good one.
Typically, I will visit with your child and other new students for a "Newcomer's Group". During this time, I meet with students and talk about their experience at East Oakview and check in with them to see how they are adjusting. We also review the school behavior expectations (Responsible, Respectful, Ready and Safe), and talk about ways to meet new friends and get used to new routines.
If you believe your child is having difficulty adjusting to a new school (e.g., feeling reluctant or afraid of coming to school, crying for no apparent reason, frequently complaining of head or stomach aches, frequently calling home, expressing anger, appearing lonely or withdrawn, having difficulty making friends, or developing sleep or bathroom problems) I encourage you to contact me or your child's teacher.
